Of Us and Others

Inspired by the WWI-era “camouflage trees” used for covert observation, Edwards has developed two sculptural installations as intimate spaces for live, anonymous conversations between LGBTQIA+ thinkers. These dialogues, recorded across various sites in Glasgow, reflect on themes central to the works of Alasdair Gray and Edwin Morgan —including queer identity, kinship, and imagined futures.

Participants — including poets, artists, researchers, young people, and activists — entered these conversations as strangers, united only through their place within the LGBTQ+ community. In Edwards’ vision, the camouflage tree becomes a symbol of safe encounter — a place where queer kinship is formed, solidarities flicker, and truths can be spoken freely, without labels.

The chosen Glasgow locations echo the literary landscapes of Gray and Morgan, enriching the film’s exploration of queer temporality, memory, and place. Of Us & Others weaves a montage of voices, ideas, and locations, anchored by the symbolism of the camouflage tree and the quiet power of what goes unspoken.
